Molasses Krinkles

These rich, full-of-molasses cookies are soft and meant to be shared.  The recipe is large enough to bring to a pot luck dinner or family reunion. This is another recipe passed down in our family for generations and it doesn’t disappoint.

There are two stories we like to tell about these cookies.  I sent a batch of these cookies to a men’s function at church–they’re one of my husband’s favorites–and when he went to gather up the remaining cookies, there were men standing at the table shoving them into their coat pockets to take them home.  My husband just laughed and told them to take as many as they wanted, that I could always make more.

I sent these to my brother when he was overseas in Iraq and bagged them in groups of two so that he could share with his friends.  When he got back, he said, “I loved those cookies.  I ate them ALL!”  He didn’t want to share them because they were so tasty.  I know you’ll enjoy them too.

Steps

1
Done

Cream butter, shortening and sugar in a large bowl.

2
Done

Add eggs and molasses and mix thoroughly.

3
Done

Mix baking soda, salt and spices in a small bowl and sprinkle over butter and sugar mixture. Mix in.

4
Done

Add the flour a little at a time until the dough has a thick but pliable consistency. The trick is, you don't want it to be dry, but you do want it to be thick enough so that you can control it with a spoon-- about the consistency of play dough.

5
Done

Put into the fridge overnight to cool.

6
Done

Take out of the fridge in the morning and form into golfball-sized balls. Roll in granulated sugar and press down with a glass on a cookie sheet.

7
Done

Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
