Molasses Krinkles

A family favorite–I sent these to my brother when he was overseas in Iraq and bagged them in groups of two so that he could share with his friends.  When he got back, he said, “I loved those cookies.  I ate them ALL!”  He didn’t want to share them because they were so tasty.  I know you’ll enjoy them too.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 2 tsps cinnamon
  • 2 tsps ginger
  • 4 and 1/2 to 5 cups flour

Instructions
  1. Cream butter, shortening and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Add eggs and molasses and mix thoroughly.
  3. Mix baking soda, salt and spices in a small bowl and sprinkle over butter and sugar mixture. Mix in.
  4. Add the flour a little at a time until the dough has a thick but pliable consistency. The trick is, you don't want it to be dry, but you do want it to be thick enough so that you can control it with a spoon-- about the consistency of play dough.
  5. Put into the fridge overnight to cool.
  6. Take out of the fridge in the morning and form into golfball-sized balls. Roll in granulated sugar and press down with a glass on a cookie sheet.
  7. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
Recipe Notes

These cookies bake better after being refrigerated overnight.  I like to cook two pans at a time and switch racks after 5 minutes.
