Ingredients

Adjust Servings:
1 cup Butter softened
1 cup Powdered Sugar
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 teaspoon Peppermint Extract
3 cups Flour
1/2 teaspoon Salt
a few drops Red Food Coloring
10 - 12 Peppermint candies chopped in a food processor

Candy Cane Cookies

You can't get much more Christmasy than these delicate, little, red and white candy canes.  They have a light, peppermint flavor that is sure to please all your friends and relatives.

Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without these lightly sweet candy cane cookies.  The kids love to make them because it’s like making play dough snakes that you get to eat.  If you think they’re just too pretty to eat, hang them on the tree.  They look just as beautiful there.

They’re made with red and white here, but they can also be made with green and white using spearmint candies instead of peppermint.  If you make both types, you’ll have the most festive cookies in town!  We have also made wreaths using this dough if you’re feeling really creative.  No matter how you decide to put these cookies together, we know you will have a lot of fun and have some great cookies to enjoy when you’re done.

Mix the softened butter and sugar in a medium sized mixing bowl until smooth and creamy.

Add the egg, vanilla and peppermint and mix until incorporated.

Sprinkle the salt over the top of the dough and mix in the flour 1 cup at a time until it forms a ball.

Divide the dough in half and form two dough balls. Set one dough ball aside and work in red food coloring a little at a time into the other ball until you have a deep red uniform color.

Wrap both balls in plastic wrap and cool in fridge overnight.

In the morning, pinch one inch balls off each of the larger balls, roll into ropes and twist together gently. pinch each end and form cane.

bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. As soon as they come out of the oven, sprinkle with processed peppermint candies and allow to cool on wire racks.
